Oh man, that was one of the many factors that put me off Mercedes Lackey.

And yet people still talk shit about Robert Jordan

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Did he have an OT3? I'm not sure that would've saved it for me, thanks to the ponderous, slow writing and dull characters.

OT4

Suddenly I'm interested.

Honestly, it's not a great series overall, especially if you're reading for the OT4, and I was kind of joking. I do think it's better than people make it out to be. You might like it tbh

I don't know if I'd give him points for an OT4 when it was more like a harem. (And smelled like wish-fulfillment to me, but I was never really into the series or meta, so I may have missed something there.)

Yeah, I wasn't entirely serious w the post

For this reason or in general? Rand was the least interesting part of that grouping.

I think the only love triangle I recall reading where I wanted them to just all be together was LJ Smith's Dark Visions trilogy.

Oh god yes. They seemed so dang happy together and I was thrilled! And then... wait... what the fuck just happened?! WHY DID Y'ALL KICK OUT THE ELF?!!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What? It was the elf and the human woman who became the couple. The human man was the one who grew apart from them romantically, although their kid was biologically his. Then he was basically single except for whatever tf he had going on with his friend/technically ex the half-elf business mogul. The plots of these books sound so weird when I write them out like this lol. I'm not bothered by the up-splitting, though. It did feel pretty organic to me, considering the characters' different life choices.

Shoot, you're right. I haven't read the books in so long I thought it was the elf and not the bard who got the boot.

Did I miss a book? Because I feel like the breaking up happened like, off stage and between two books so I got the new one and was very "OMGWTF?!" about them breaking up. I was a teenager in a poly relationship with two guys and role models weren't exactly thick on the ground, so I was pretty broken up about the breakup.

Now that I think about it, what stories that aren’t fanfic or porn even have an OT3 where all three members are human and survive? I see happy OT3 with nonhumans sometimes (e.g. The Uplift War), but on the rare occasion they’re all human, at least one of them dies tragically.

Actually...

Might be a little late putting this in, but "The Fire's Stone" by Tanya Huff pretty much ends in a happy OT3 situation (or, depending on your interpretation, a happy gay couple married to their possibly-ace female friend). I think it's out of print, so may be hard to find, but definitely worth it if you can. A lot of Tanya Huff's stuff is good, actually.

Another reason Sense8 rocked.
OT3s that are just window-dressing are annoying as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the one in the secret was a legit 3some for at least two books of the series not counting the first one where they all have Angst and Feels that they can't figure out till the end. They split off I think in book 4 when the human guy decides he wants to live in the human world and the elf guy/human woman want to stay living in the elf lands instead. But they all stay close friends + have a kid together.

Try Sense8.

Born to Run?! Oh my gosh! That was my favorite book when I was a almost teen! Actually the whole series (well, I only remember there being two books) but yes, oh that's a blast from the past I haven't thought of in forever. I wouldn't dare go back and read them now for fear they're actually horrible but they sure did introduce me to urban fantasy and make me love muscle cars for the longest time. Dang, thanks for the flashback, OP

They re not terrible. A bit dated now, but they still hold up as nostalgia value at least. The characters are still fun.
