Knowing is pretty easy but actually doing it doesn't always work that well

I only feel this way with small talk. Especially with co-workers I only see in the hallway.

Never. I was raised on sarcasm and gallow's humour, and I also have had to fight against my ingrained need to offer solutions when someone is ranting at me about something, because repeated "Oh that sucks" makes me feel like I sound like I don't care, when I do, but I want to help you fix the problem, not just hear you vent about it.

I have rare bouts of inspiration in which I say exactly the right thing. It happens once every five years or so by my count.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no? It's not like I'm perfect and psychic and I always know exactly what to say to all people in all circumstances (no one does), but I get by okay.

We all have our moments of brainfreeze. But knowing how to talk to people is a skill you acquire with time and practice, nobody's born with it.
