in my experience, at least with cosplayers, they develop a selective amnesia that they ever said anything like that when they were younger. they just keep on keepin' on, not realizing how much they're aging.

I don't know if there's anyone who actually held themselves to quitting fandom when they turned 21 or 25 or whatever arbitrary age they set. Most of those I know who faded out generally found a new interest.
