But as other commenters have said, it's not really more of the same tired "Will they or won't they?" trope -- it's more a case of two people who are attracted to each other, admire each other, but are also well aware that unless one of them has a RADICAL change (or does major repressing) to who they are, a relationship probably wouldn't work long-term.

Contrast them with Hugh and Dot: the obstacles to their relationship aren't so fundamental.

Every couple that fits this trope has unique characteristics and narrative differences (or again, made-up, often increasingly unrealistic obstacles) from others. Individual character development does not mean you’re immune from relying on exhausted cliches. I’d still rather see writers show a couple with fundamental differences try to work through them together than more will they won’t they crap. YMMV

My own mileage on this particular series is that it seems clear to both us and them that they will; the 'won't they' bit is off the table. The question now is more "How?" (which might fall under the sort of thing you said you'd like to see).

Just chiming in (very late) to agree. I went into this show really hoping for a platonic male/female relationship, because the "Will they, won't they?" trope is SO OVERDONE and often poorly executed. This... didn't really fit that mold. There's a clear progression from "They are attracted but can't/won't act on it due to conflicting morals, and they both acknowledge the other person is entitled to those morals", them growing closer as friends and working partners as the attraction heats up, and them slowly figuring out what they each want and can give to a potential relationship. Even the brief flirtation with a love triangle in season 3 is MUCH more about their own desires/needs than a genuine triangle. It's honestly my favourite ship of any media, ever.

This, absolutely. Aside from the series being sex-positive overall, it's so refreshing that there's no Phryne-shaming coming from Jack. Yes, he makes a few wry comments about "the modern woman" (and does show flickers of jealousy when old beaux of Phryne show up) but he's not an ass about it. It's refreshing.
