114. Oh man, don't I know it. I can't act and I'm white as a polar bear, but playing an Avatar character would be awesome.

129. Stories like that have made me love creepy underground places, or anywhere that looks like it could be another world. *__*

149. Most of the time I'm more upset about innocent animals getting killed off than I am about human characters dying. Maybe it's that they never get the chance to understand why--but then, a lot of the humans who died in that book didn't either, so IDK. It probably has something to do with their vulnerability and helplessness, and yeah yeah I know, she's a genetically-engineered killer lynx or whatever, not so helpless.

153. No, you don't "literally die," unless you're a zombie now.

Seriously, people, I'm all for the language changing, but if we lose the word "literally," we won't have a word that means "the opposite of figuratively." It's useful to the language as it is. Stop using it to mean the exact opposite of what it means.

*mourns the loss of "literally."* I fear it has gone the way of "ironically."

Thank you, that was driving me nuts.

THAT WORD. I DO NOT THINK IT MEANS WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANS.

I doubt people use "literally", er... literally. It's more using it as gross over-exaggeration than something really serious. I'm pretty sure that people still use it was "the opposite of figuratively".

I mean , "I would so figuratively die!" doesn't sound as nice, you know.

Yeah, I know--but that usage adds to confusion and decreases clarity. If people are using "literally" as an intensifier, it becomes hard to tell what they're really saying.

"I got such a bad sunburn, I was literally red as a lobster!"

Are they just saying they got a really bad sunburn, or are they actually trying to describe what they looked like afterwards? Or, to be more facetious, with all the people saying "I was literally glued to my seat!" about a great movie, how will we know when someone goes to a movie theater and accidentally sits in a puddle of crazy glue? Sad times.

You don't have to say "I would so figuratively die!"; just...use an intensifier (like "completely" or, if you don't mind sounding a bit Valley Girl, "totally"; or if you don't mind sounding a bit snooty, "utterly").

And yeah, I know, I'm nitpicking. But this particular misuse is annoying.

THANK YOU.

It's been bugging me recently.

I actually saw a book a few days ago with examples of when people have said "literally" to emphasise, and with illustrations. I should have bought it.
