Re: 101

Well, I used to give card game demos. Hours and hours of them. There were three different ways it could go, three different sort of guys (I say guys because I honestly never recall giving a demo to a girl, which is a cryin' shame, I tell you.)

1) Painfully shy guy comes into the booth, seeing the sign for game demos is up, and asks for a demo. Person running the booth looks around, sees that I'm free, and matches us up. Look of frightened horror passes over the shy guy's face as he realizes he now has to try to talk to me for 30-45 minutes. Both of us are good-natured but miserable with discomfort for the duration, because he can't seem to talk to me in a boy/girl way, and can't seem to talk to me in a person/person way, no matter what I try or how I joke around to bring him out of his shell. Finally it's over, he leaves, and we are both immeasurably relieved.

It is a fundamental truth that young men who are completely uncomfortable talking to girls are a larger-than-normal percentage of the population at gaming/sci-fi oriented conventions. This makes being a girl at one of those conventions, especially one working the con, very difficult at times.

2) The would-be Don Juan. In the day-to-day world, this guy usually behaves pretty normally. Going to conventions, however, it occurred to him at some point how many guys at the con have difficulties with social interactions, and this seems to make him think he is some sort of super-being at a con by comparison.

The Don Juan will make the most obvious of double-entendres (although calling them "double" is being generous, as they usually have one and a half meanings at best) along the lines of, "Hey baby, I'd love to slide my card into your deck, as long as you promise to shuffle gently." He will hit on any girls at the con, regardless of their age, sexual orientation, or marital status. I absolutely mean this, especially the marital status part. I was hit on by would-be Don Juans even with my engagement/wedding ring on my finger, and even within earshot of my fiancee/husband (yes, even after being introduced to him).

And no, the Don Juan isn't kidding. It's not his sense of humor. He doesn't act like this outside of cons. He's just hoping to get some while he's on his road trip, and he thinks this is the place where he "looks good by comparison".

What the Don Juan wannabe doesn't know is that any girl at a con would rather spend time around the painfully shy guys described in 1) above (even if they're too uncomfortable to even talk) than spend five seconds with the poor man's Don Juan.

3) Blessedly, the rest of the con-going population is made up of "regular people", whatever that might mean. They are the people you meet who share some of your interests, people who like to talk about the stuff you like to talk about, and which make going to cons, even to work at them, worthwhile. You just have to brave the other groups to find them. :)
