The way you're describing the merchandising sounds identical to every big studio movie aimed at children, OP. Not sure why The Little Mermaid's the only one that bothers you.

I liked this movie when I got older and I could relate more with Ariel's plight with her father and her desire for independence and making her own choices.

Like I don't doubt there's some spoiled people that like the movie. But also some people who may seem to be spoiled brats from your perspective may have something going you don't know about or may not actually be spoiled brats at all. *Shrug*

I only watched the film as an adult, and whatever good qualities it had went out of the window when the king of willingly surrendered his entire world and all the people and fishes in it.

Yeah, I know I'm doing Disney wrong.
