Lapis and Peridot are my two surprising favorites of this show, *because* of how much deprogramming and how far they have to go on the path to getting better.

But fandom is a fickle beast (which I wrote as fuckle first, which... tru) so naturally they're just... not going to understand Lapis. Or deliberately misunderstand her because Everything Needs A Villain.

One major theme in the story is how the pedestal/deminisation dichotomy is generally a very incorrect way to perceive anyone. Fandom proceeds to either put characters in the story on a pedestal, or to demonise them.

My mom developed severe depression, and alcoholism after my older brother died in an accident, and the way she acts at times can be so similar to how Lapis behaves. I've gotten really attached to Lapis, because seeing her just gives me that "someone else has been through this! I'm not alone!" feeling. She's actually become one of my favorite characters.

Honestly considering what we've seen of gem culture on home world it's a wonder any home world gem can be anywhere near well adjusted at all.

100% agreed, especially when the characters themselves show understanding and patience with her (yes, mixed with frustration and sadness, but they clearly don't hate her).

It also really really frustrates me when people take what Jasper said about their relationship at face value and ignore that "You should come back to me because I'm the only one who can put up with you" is one of the oldest abuser tactics in the book.

I agree.

Man, it's the SU fandom. So many of them are picky, pretentious asswads who will absolutely shit talk any given character for doing something "p R o B l E m A t I C!!!11!1" My reaction to "Alone at Sea" was "Jasper and Lapis have both done bad things, but I think that both of them deserve to get better and/or be redeemed." Which apparently meant I was pro-rape, pro-abuse and deliberately ran around triggering people or some shit?

So to answer your question, OP-- yes, they're missing the whole damn point.

The people who outright hate Lapis all seem to be giant Jasper stans, too. I follow an artist who posts about how just seeing Lapis's face makes her extremely angry and they defend Jasper til they're blue in the face and I'm just ???
