Movies themes your sick of?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it is revenge films. Specifically two types. Men getting revenge for dead family, and women getting revenge for being raped. Has there ever been a revenge movie starring a woman that isn't because of that?

you're*

Just getting ahead of anyone.

I love revenge movies but yeah, those reasons are VERY played out. Come up with new shit. And there's like an infinite number of reasons why someone might want revenge so it's not like they're limited.

Gore horror films. Or horror films that have pointless jump scares.

Also, movies that are marketed as horror but actually are not.

Anti-hero movies and extremely dark movies that are dark and gritty just for the sake of being dark and gritty.

romcoms feat two people arguing/one person being a dick to the other for most of the movie, with that being passed off as 'chemistry'. bonus shit points if it's in the name of snappy dialogue, as if it's impossible to write witty exchanges that don't turn into a cunt-off.

in queer films, though that trend is thankfully dying: "i have gay panic and that makes cheating okay and if the person i'm currently dating takes the fact that i'm cheating badly, it's because they're a raging homophobe and not, y'know, someone whose trust i broke by cheating. also the new relationship i'm entering is obviously not going to crash and burn because it's True Love and the fact that i displayed zero communication skills for most of the movie doesn't get addressed at all, nor will it affect this new relationship."

also in queer films, also mostly dying (hah) out: "we're gay and one of us has to die."

Kill Bill.

Except a near rape is the first thing that happens to her in the movie, and she continues to be massively sexualised throughout? I'm not sure Kill Bill is a prime example here.

I think it's also implied she was raped continuously while comatose, but it isn't clear if she got her revenge on anyone who took advantage of her, aside from the last guy who tried, and the hospital worker.

How was she "massively sexualized" during the rest of the story, though? I don't really remember that.

YES and also the movies Tarantino took a lot of influence from for the Kill Bills, Lady Snowblood and The Bride Wore Black

I could do without two things, mainly...

Humour derived from humiliating the protagonists or significant secondary characters (aside from the antagonists)...

Villains (like proper villains, not antagonists who have a valid point) who spend most of the story going on about how they're the real good guys. Obviously, I expect most to actually think it, but spending all day lecturing the heroes on it...Bah.

Obscure endings/non-endings.

Was watching A Quiet Place last night and while I'm thrilled they thinned the herd of stupidity five minutes in, I hated the ending. It just... ENDS.

Savior themes, omg, stoppit.

Quirky person fixing non-quirky person with their quirkiness (including the extensions of that, like disabled person 'fixing' non-disabled person, people with mental issues like depression or actual illness or Autism, etc., 'fixing' the 'able' and the 'magical person of color' crap).

I saw a preview for that the other day! I was only half watching because I had assumed it was going to be another Hallmark-style Christian movie, since that's the only things I've seen Jennifer Garner in lately, but then it went in a completely different direction. I'm so ready for her to go back to her action film roots.

I really thought I was sick of the "grieving parent gets revenge on their child's killers" genre, but it turns out swapping the genders and casting Jennifer Garner is enough to get me interested again.

The Brave One?

There might have been a sexual element to the original assault, i don't remember, but the focus is on how she's pissed about the death of her husband.

Dystopian stuff, magical fantasy everything, and any kind of movie that forces reconciliation/forgiveness between family members and preaches the importance of family while ignoring the fact that some people would be better off without shitty people in their lives, even if they share DNA (and even some of the better family members never quite get how damaging their actions were)

"Heros" who are actually immature man children. Snarky quips no longer save this scenario for me. I like to see some growth and maturity over the course of the movie instead of having the dude's refusal to behave like a decent adult be celebrated by all. This goes double if he's paired romantically with an uptight killjoy girlfriend/wife who learns to loosen up through him.

Historical films that add lots of untrue crap to the plot to try make it interesting. History is exploding with people who had dramatic and OMG lives enough to not need to add a damn thing.
