I'm sorry you have to deal with that, OP. People should really tag their shit.

I can sympathize. A few years ago I had some serious problems irl and if I unknowingly read a fic where a character went through something similar I just had to backbutton or risk an anxiety attack.

I know some people enjoy picturing their favorite characters having similar experiences and struggles as them, but for me fiction is all about escapism.

Same, I had a life-threatening illness with a tough recovery and I really don’t want in my fanfic or indeed escapist profic. Looking at you, Marvel Comics!

Hey, this was me from a secrets-you-can't be bothered to make thread! Thank you, secret maker!

;)

You're awesome and this was an interesting secret. I'm just sorry you have to put up with this, nonny.

I totally get that. Fandom and fic are my happy places - no angst ever lasts, no hurt is terminal, and the endings are always happy.

I don't want 'real life' struggles that aren't fixed by the end of the fic.

This is how I feel about fics too. I do like angst and some sort of peril, but I want things to end happily and with my OTP together.

I'm sorry OP. :(

God, yes. I have a birth defect and a few years ago, stumbled upon a fic where that particular defect was made fun of. Granted that fic was comedy, but I still felt sad about it :(

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I'm sorry, nonny. People are dicks.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I am not disabled, just severely impaired, and I hate reading about my conditions or related conditions.

That said, other disabilities or diseases I do not mind -- I used to love watching medical dramas, because the doctors in those actually care, and they cure. <3

It's similar with all the untagged surprise!transfic. Actual trans people might not want to have some weird version of fetishised trans issues sprung on them untagged when reading fic. I know of several cases were people had their dysphoria triggered because the authors never tagged their stuff properly (which they often don't in this icky "gotcha" kind of way where they're proud of tricking people into reading their trans fetish fodder and feel all progressive about it).

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sweet jesus YES. The surprise!trans fics definitely turned me off from the OW fandom for a while.

tbh I think it's become a sort of fetish for some people. I've seen so many 'autistic/trans/whatever character of the day' blogs (tumblr, I know, I know) that make no sense. Do they just...pick random characters and feel that's what makes them special? Idk
