Vaan genuinely ruined what could have been a good game. There was zero reason whatsoever for him to be the main character-- everything just kind of happened around him, he was entirely secondary to the actual plot that was happening. I think maybe they were trying to go with an everyman that the player could project onto that wasn't necessarily the focus, but it even failed in that regard because they had to give him at least a little personality, and it was a grating one.

That and the battle system sucked. God, XII sucks.

nayrt but I remember thinking it was kind of interesting that the main character wasn't the protagonist, he was just a normal dude that didn't really affect the plot in a significant way. I guess it was more interesting just because we had had a long set of super secretly awesome soldiers/science experiments/whatever in previous Final Fantasies, so it was kind of a neat shift.

I mostly just felt like all the action was happening far away from my characters. Comparing to, like, FFVII while you are directly tailing the destruction caused by Sephiroth and have personal and emotional ties to the antagonist, FFXII's action felt really remote. I liked Ashe, Balthier, and Fran a lot, and I don't remember hating Vaan, but it has been quite a long time since I played it.
