At the beginning of the movie: I need to find Rey again and get away from this doomed insurgency.

At the end of the movie: the Resistance is where I belong, and I will give up my life for this cause if I have to.

That's the point: He already had that development for a big part in TFA. TLJ for some reason retconned the fact that he voluntarily went back to Starkiller to help out not only Rey but especially the Resistance. He had already put his life on the line for them in TFA.

In TFA he went from only wanting to get away from the first Order and fighting to being willing to face them to save the single person of his friend Rey.

Everyone and their dog in the fandom assumed that automatically meant he was committed to the resistance too, but that was never actually IN TFA.
