i always lol when ppl who like au's are all 'but it's about keeping the characters the same in different settings!'... except that in every mundane au i've seen the characters are nothing alike.

i'll grant that maybe 1% of au writers can maintain the same characterization as canon, but 99% can't and don't, so it just reads like two oc's who happen to share the names of the canon characters.

you can make the same argument for a lot of canon-fanfic too, which is true, but at least with canon-fic i can pretend it's still them when the characterization is a bit off. and honestly if it's too off i'll backclick out anyway.
