I can see that with Iron Man - the alcoholism is a little rough, but I guess that's not part of the fantasy.

But Batman? That's a pretty fucking dark wish to be fulfilling.

So’s Drizzt Do’Urden, and look at how popular he got. And it’s not like Shadow the Hedgehog is sunshine and roses. Some people really like the idea that you can still be a hero if, or even because, you’re an outcast who’s lost your family.

Well, but not just losing your family, but also (a) being an emotionally crippled wreck and then subsequently (b) getting basically no joy from your enormous wealth and devoting your life primarily to beating the shit out of street-level thugs.

It seems a level beyond even Drizzt-level Grizzled Outcast.

I took the secret as more general and not about those specific iterations of either character. For Batman, it really depends on which Batman you're talking about. He's not a drunk maladjusted asshole in every iteration. I don't know Iron Man so well so I can't speak on him but Batman has moments where he's got his family (Alfred, Robins, etc.) and his purpose and hope.

But the wish fulfillment aspect isn't the specific character traits. It's not being Batman specifically; it's being a billionaire vigilante. It's being a billionaire with the means to do whatever you want. It's the wish to beat up someone, either to seek justice you can't get in real life, or to exert violence without consequences. And, this extends to the fact that if you are Batman or Iron Man, most storylines paint the bad guys as unambiguously bad so there's none of the consequences that come with being a vigilante in real life. It is wish fulfillment. It's not something created by actual billionaires after all.

Even there, like... I get the wish fulfillment of being a billionaire but I have to say that if I was a billionaire, running around and beating people up definitely would not be first on my list of things to do.

It's two different wish fulfillment things paired together. People often wish to be vigilantes to just mete out justice their own way. That's a very popular trope, often in revenge stories. And then to have all the money in the world to do things however you want.

It's not rocket science. I don't want to be a vigilante and it's not how I would spend my money but I've seen enough media to know that a lot of people enjoy it. It IS wish fulfillment, just not your wish fulfillment. And that's okay. Not everything is about you.
