Writing Help

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I signed up for a smut fan fiction exchange, and just got my assignment. The person I've been assigned asked for pairings I'm not that interested in and gave no direction other than the pairings, so I'm a little stuck on what to write for them.

What do you guys do to get inspiration?

Find a pairing similar to that one in looks that you do like. Write your fic. Swap out the names afterward.

That's a shitty thing to do on the prompter's part. If they can't be arsed to provide directions, I'd choose whatever is your favourite kink, have fun with it, and if it doesn't suit the prompter in the end it'll be their own damn fault in the first place!

I did consider doing this, because they selected any warnings/ratings... But my only idea is noncon and I don't want to give them something they don't like!

If they don't like/don't want non con, then IMO they should've said so upfront. Not trying to be mean here, but people shouldn't give crappy, uninformative prompts in the first place and if they do, then they shouldn't be surprised if they don't get what they want. Maybe it can be a lesson to the person you got. Either way, I wouldn't sweat it, 'cause clearly they didn't.

Anon from above, came back to say exactly this. Go for it, do the hot noncon YOU like, and if they don't, it's still their own damn fault.

Depending on how the exchange is run, you might be full of shit. Many exchanges are set up with the understanding that you might not get prompts and if you can't deal with that you should not sign up or not offer that fandom/pairing.

Maybe a digression but I'd consider that a poorly run exchange, and I've modded a few back in the day. Like... why would you want to make it harder for the person who gets your prompts to write you a nice fic? What kind of mod would want it to be harder for the participants to do a good job and get a nice fic? IDGI.

The only thing that would make it poorly run is if the mod isn't clear enough on that being the policy. Most exchanges I'm familiar with have optional details these days and they don't have problems getting participants who might prefer getting prompts (and not giving prompts is still not the norm) but understand they're not entitled to them. Not everyone signs up with strong preferences of what to receive and that's fine.

I personally have no problem with barring the uninspired from signing up!

NAYRT but to me it has nothing to do with being 'uninspired' as a writer. I could come up with dozens of ideas and plots etc even if only given a pairing (provided it's a pairing I know, but most exchanges tend to be fandom specific).

To me it has everything to do with me writing something that the person won't LIKE because they haven't bothered to ask for anything beyond 'a/b please'.

Okay so I'ma write you some a/b amputee fetish scat porn and then you get upset because all of that is totally not your thing. Well... sucks to be you.

I dunno, I think about what hotness is

I agree with the first response - just write about another pairing you are interested and then change names and details as appropriate. With no direction, you could either go vanilla to play it safe or just write whatever and too bad if they don't like it.

I came here to say this as well.

Even if it's OOC, most people don't care as long as there's hott hott bonings.

Honestly, people who give prompts with little or no information deserve whatever they get. IA with the other comments that just said to write a fic and swap out names. Maybe I'm being a jerk here, but I wouldn't even avoid non-con if that was my only idea because if your person had preferences, they should've stated them. It's inconsiderate not to.

Write to the mod and tell them that you got no direction beyond the pairing, and that you're not terribly familiar with said pairings and need a bit more to go on - at the very least, you need dislikes so you don't write something they hate. Someone giving *no* direction is being kinda jerky.

I'm assuming it's anon, so the mod can pass along your comments and get something more from your person (hopefully).

Otherwise - find some of the most popular fics in that pairing and skim around to see what people seem to like and just - write that.

Good luck!

Yeah, this. I've had more than a few exchanges where I've had to go through the mods for clarifications because the recipient has been ridiculously vague and unhelpful in their original sign up.

As much as it's jerky to go, "Oh I don't know, anything...", I still feel it would kind of be a little jerky to half ass it and/or not ask for a little more direction and end up giving something they hate (even if it's kind of their own fault).

Yup, i've done it, too - mostly, it's no big.

But i gotta wonder at someone who gives *no* direction of any kind. Very few people are actually happy to get 'anything'.

AYRT: I've just sent a message asking if they had any squicks to stay away from! (I tried to look through their own bookmarks and things in the ship's tag, but the ships are all on the more popular side so I don't know what to do with this. (Honestly, I think they just gave no direction because the ships are popular and they maybe just want something vanilla, which is not my jam to write at all so I'm floundering haha)

Wow, how incredibly frustrating. That would really make writing anything at all hard. I hope they give you some direction!

Look through prompts by other people in the exchange. Write to one I like, that still matches the parameters set by my recip.
