The kind of doctor you want for basic checkups may work in "family medicine" or "general practice." Avoid specialists if you don't have a specific problem or a referral from your regular doctor (the latter is often required by insurance.) Small clinics rather than big hospitals may be a better place to look for a regular doctor. See if your insurance has a list of in-network doctors. Verify that the place you're going takes your insurance before you go. Consider location - someplace near home or work is good.
