The character in Rub and Tug is a historical person for whom there is zero conclusive evidence that was trans.

This is something that I've seen said a lot here, and one point that I'd like to make is that, one, the initial reporting of the movie by sites like Vulture and Hollywood Reporter identified Gill as trans - Vulture says "transmasculine", THR says "transgender". Two, as far as I'm aware, the people involved in making the movie never actually made this argument. I mean, ScarJo's defense of taking on the role was "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment", all of whom obviously played trans characters.

So I think this particular point is something of a red herring, because it certainly seems that at the very least the people making the film understood the character as trans and wanted to depict the character that way.

I will point out that ScarJo's representative said the Tambor, Leto, Huffman comment, not the actress herself. I know they are their public spokespeople but they aren't the same thing as from the horse's mouth.

The specific language when the statement was released was "Scarlett Johansson issued this comment to Bustle via a representative"

So I guess you can parse that however you want

Yeah, I guess that's a fair point. But I still find it annoying everyone's acting like Gill was definitely trans, as if there was a shred of proof for that.
