Re: Help!
Does anyone have any tips for finding/tracking someone down online? I don't mean anything super creepily specific like their street name or address or anything. Just finding any activity. I'm convinced that they must be active somewhere on the net, but I'm getting nada.
Before anyone thinks I'm trying to stalk/harass some poor stranger, I'm trying to track down my mother who ran off years ago. I don't believe she would be able to keep herself off the net, and I did find some activity a few years back, but it's all been scrubbed.
Re: Help!
(Anonymous) 2018-07-26 04:33 am (UTC)(link)Open a word doc and type out everything you know for sure: names used, locations she has been, education, employment, known associates (I'm aware unfortunately of many cases where the person in question has cut contact with some people and not others unbeknownst to the people who are searching) , hobbies and interests, habits and addictions, old email addresses.
Make a second list of things you don't know for sure but feel are a possibility. E.g. she mentioned she always wanted to live in Mexico, I think I heard her mention someone named Steve but I don't have a last name, she had family in this area but I don't know their names, lifestyle factors such as what they'd try to be in close proximity to (beauty salons, the ocean, would only live with other people of the same ethnicity, etc.)
Start on google and just try as many combinations of information as you can think of and see what comes up.
Next on social media. The search filters might help if you don't mind wading through the results. Search possible names, locations, look through friend's lists on profiles of all known associates and check any profiles that have vague names or pictures or any resembling what you think she might look like now.
If she kept photos that are memorable to her (college graduation, travel etc.) she may have uploaded them at some point on the internet. You could try reverse image search on google if you have another copy.
If she is working or has worked in the same field she might have job-related activity (linkedin etc.), or be mentioned in corporate newsletters, local papers etc. in association with that work.
Whatever her last known activity was would probably be better for clues of personal infomation and what she would post and sites she might use (does she blog, network, take pictures, etc.). If you've saved any URLs it might be archived somewhere (wayback machine).
There are websites specifically for tracking people down or for finding profiles associated with names and email addresses, some of them offer "premium" services that you have to pay for. They're a bit dodgy.
There are ways to do so through public records if you go through legal channels. It really depends on the laws where you live, where she's living and the circumstances around her leaving. If there are financial and legal issues that are unresolved, etc.
Keep in mind that you might find out a lot more than you want to know. She could have passed, or adopted other children, or anything really. Just take care of yourself.
