Films!

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-07-28 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
What have you seen recently? Best/worst thing you've seen at the cinema? What's your film of the year so far?

I'm lamenting the fact that I missed my chance to see Hereditary and now have to wait for the DVD release. I love psychological/mindscrew horror and this ones looks awesome.

The best and only film I've seen in theaters is Avengers Infinity War.

Best movies I've seen recently are Calibre, Godfather Part 1&2, and Cargo.

I feel like the only person in the world who hasn't seen The Godfather. It's one of those films where I've legit had people do the pointing/screaming thing from Invasion of the Bodysnatchers at me because I haven't seen it. :(

Nothing's really blown me away, but I really liked Infinity War and A Quiet Place.

I really enjoyed A Quiet Place. I wanted to see it in cinemas but knew there was bound to be some idiot rustling three bags of crisps at once or talking on their phone or something. Horror and cinemas don't mix for me. :(

I was kind of meh on A Quiet Place. I mean it was decent, but there seemed like a lot of rampant stupidity as well.

(Spoilers?)

I enjoyed it, but yeah, when the whole baby thing happened I did think, "You have to be quiet to stay alive, and you're voluntarily making a living noisemaker?"

the most recent movies I've seen in the theater were Isle of Dogs, Annihilation, Death of Stalin and I, Tonya, all of which I liked a lot.

Annihilation was probably the most freaked out I've been from a film in a long time. Massively underrated/underadvertised, IMO.

I'm really intrigued by Isle of Dogs but I saw the trailer in the cinema and there's something about the animation style that really unnerves me. :( Definitely looks interesting, though!

I loooooooooooved Death of Stalin. Loooooooved it. So funny the whole way through, so good, so dark, almost everyone in it was great. Especially Khruschev/Buscemi and Palin/Molotov, and also Kaganovich and Mikoyan made me laugh every time they were on screen. Zhukov was amazing. It was great. The only problem with it is Tambor being in it.

I couldn't help thinking any movie with Steve Buscemi and Michael Palin in it had to be good and I was right. :)

Most recent was Ocean's 8 and it was awesome, everyone was hot as shit and it was a lot of fun.

Best in theatre was probably DP2.

The last movies I saw in the theater were Jurassic World 2 and Infinity Wars. Enjoyed both of them immensely.

At home, I watched the original Thomas Crown Affair for the first time. I could care less about the plot, but I was ridiculously attracted to both of the main characters, and their chemistry was off the charts. Damn. The remake doesn't hold a candle to that chemistry.

Let's see.

In theaters:
The Post - solid movie, well-acted, reminded me of All the President's Men, but not quite as compelling
Black Panther - very good movie, involving plot, interesting characters
Avengers: Infinity War - meh, felt fragmented and didn't feel resolved at the end
Ocean's Eight - amazing cast, but there was little of the giddiness I want from a heist movie
Incredibles 2 - excellent, expands on the first movie and doesn't take away from any of the characters I loved
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - entertaining movie, but the plot was a little disjointed

On DVD:
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - not bad, but the first was much better
The Calling - interesting cast and plot, but kind of dreary
The First Time - fine teen rom-com, with lots of talking
Florence Foster Jenkins - strange, but well-acted, funny at times, but the second-hand embarrassment was bad in places, ended up just feeling a lot of pity and sadness
The Right Stuff - somehow had never seen this before, but really good, interesting focus
Eddie the Eagle - I now think ski jumpers are even more audacious than I used to, but it was an interesting look into one person's determination
American Assassin - saw it in the theater last year, but couldn't make up my mind about it, so decide to re-watch, and so, still a little lackluster and more violent than it needs to be, but not bad
Star Trek Beyond - feels like fanfiction (Kirk gets beat up a lot, people kept saying how much Kirk needed Spock, even though that is not really clear from their actual behavior, both thought about leaving, McCoy was extra McCoy, Scotty gets upstaged by new character), but very action-packed, so I enjoyed it

On Demand:
Spider-Man: Homecoming - pretty good movie and Peter seems like an actual teenager
Spielberg - documentary, well-done, gave me a bit of a different perspective than what I'd had

I....actually just 10 minutes ago got home from watching Hereditary. It WAS very good. You will still like it at home, trust me, although things like the sound design WERE good it wasn't like A Quiet Place where the sound in a theater setting was one of its best parts (if that makes sense). You just gotta watch it in the dark if you are down to do so

I've seen: Avengers Infinity War, Deadpool 2, A Quiet Place, The Incredibles 2, Ready Player One, Skyscraper, and Solo.

Ready Player One was my favorite, followed by Deadpool 2 and Skyscraper.
