Aaaaah Banana Fish here too. I'm slowly reading up on the manga too, even though as of episode four, the anime is definitely doing it better.

I decided not to try reading the manga, and just go into the anime fresh. At any rate, the manga's art looks a little too dated for me, and I love the anime's style so much.

I picked up a few volumes of the manga used a year ago, and figured this was as good time as any to give it a try. I guess it doesn't harm that I'm very fascinated by watching adaptations that way, heh.

I am super curious about the differences - I know they modernized the setting and all! Maybe once I finish the anime, I'll give the manga a shot to see how they compare. Is the plot pretty much the same so far?

Outside of the setting update and cutting some unimportant scenes, very little is changed. The anime seems set to bang the thematic drums harder by visual symbolism in places where the manga didn't. The only concrete thing I can remember added was an extra layer of Ash dealing with his fellow inmates that I don't recall happening in the manga.

That's pretty interesting! I'd naturally expect a few tweaks, including minor additions/subtractions when adapting manga to half-hour anime episodes, and the medium of animation allows you more freedom to do artsy stuff. Pretty cool that it's mostly the same, though. But that means they have quite a lot of ground to cover in 24 episodes, right?

Honestly, I've only read about half the manga, so I can't say how much plot they might or might not have to cut to fit it in. A friend of mine who's read it all has complained about the pacing, so I guess we're hoping for the anime to fix that as well?
