Re: What are your favorite conspiracy theories?

1) Any phantom time hypothesis. The best is Anatoly Fomenko's New Chronology, which posits that all of human history before roughly the year 1000 AD is false and never happened. It's totally absurd and I love it. There's also Herbert Illig, who argued that the years between 614 AD and 911 AD never happened and were fabricated in (what we would call) the 10th century. It's just so bizarre and obviously wrong.

2) The KLF never burned a million pounds. The KLF were an anarcho-pop group from the 80s and 90s in Britain who are arguably most famous for going to an island off the coast of Scotland in 1994 and burning a million pounds of their earnings from the music business. I absolutely do not believe and will never believe that they actually burned a million pounds, there's no way it's true, of course the KLF would lie about something like that.

I had never heard about the phantom time conspiracy until I got into the Skeptoid podcast. The explanations for how these people came to these conclusions are utterly fascinating even if you're just going "dude, no, that's not how that works."

I've never heard of phantom time before, but I've heard the opposite, tgat everything is way older than "mainstrearm history" states and that homo sapiens has been around for a million years (and also that Piltdown Man is real). I was flipping through a book on it once and got the impression that people were very patiently explaining things to the author but he was already convinced that everyone was lying to him to protect their jobs (not how science and academia work).
