"TV nerds" are a small minority compared to the millions of people who watched the show every week.

I accept that. But it can still be meaningful to talk about the opinions in those groups if you spend a lot of time in those subcircles. And I think it's mostly just pedantic to ignore that and insist on the fact that it's popular in more general circles.
