Well, it's generally frowned upon in the business world, but I don't see what the big deal is when you're interacting with others in fandom.

This.

They should use their name for their professional e-mail, but other than that? UzumakiNaruto, Harry_P0tter, JohnSnow27, Shiro-Shirogane and Inuyasha1fan are all just the same. It's not a big deal.

They're not fun usernames though. Something that plays off the series would be cooler imo.

I kept my old fandom emails just in case anyone ever wanted to gt in touch with me, but for business/grownup use I got a different gmail address.

Same. My professional email is my name, but my fandom email is some weeb shit I came up with in sixth grade and I still keep it in case an old fandom buddy wants to reconnect.

This. I keep my old email addresses for the same reason.

I think it's a bad idea in professional and many academic spaces, potentially a bit weird but not inappropriate in other non-fandom spaces, but in a fannish space, who cares?

The user names that give me pause are things like "JaydensMom" because leaving everything else aside, I always wonder what happens if they have more kids. Do they change their name to "JaydenandKaylasMom?" Does Kayla just get left out? Poor Kayla.

This made me laugh because my sister has 2 kids and has had the same email since my nephew was born 21 years ago that is his initials and mom as the email address. My niece was born 5 years later. All of the sudden, very recently, my sister started using an email with just her own name. I asked her about it, and she said my niece was upset that she wasn't included in the email so she had to change the address to just her own name.

Back on topic, I have no issue with people having fandom emails that are character names. If you love that character, why not celebrate that?

I know someone through a forum who had a name like that. Then she had another kid and changed her name to something like HaydenAndKaylensMom. Then she had another kid and was HaydenKaylenJaydensMom. She now goes by MomOfSix.

Why is it a bad idea in academic spaces? I never understood that, and I don't agree. Fortunately, they don't have a problem with it here.

Oh god, I have a friend who's an engineer in Tokyo who goes by Naruto in every online handle he owns. I used to think it was so cringy and embarrassing until I visited him in Japan and found out all his friends and co-workers just called him Naruto IRL, like it was nbd. His real name in our mother's tongue is difficult for Japanese people to pronounce, so they've adopted this as a perfectly normal alternative.

I still wouldn't do it myself but I have to wonder.

They are just happy they can call him a food item.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-04 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Tbf as a nickname that's not so bad.

Naruto is, among other things, a place in the Inland sea near Shikoku. I wonder if it exists as a real surname - many names are places, it wouldn't be that far out of the realm of possibility.

I'm just glad I work in a place (university) where they let you pick any username - including from fandom. I think it is so much better when people pick something that they actually feel they can identify with instead of just going with their real name. That is boring as fuck.
