Huh... saying you don't want her to be extremely emotionally dependent on the Joker is like saying you want a Bruce Wayne whose parents never died and has no issues with that.

Like, yeah, you could get one, in theory. That guy would be a fundamentally different character and wouldn't be Batman though. And your insane clown girl who doesn't give a shit about the Joker and is even crazier than he is! wouldn't be Harley Quinn. She'd be an entirely new girl.

Which you might want. And I can get why you might. But it wouldn't be any recognizable version of Harley - it'd be fem!Joker. So why even bother trying to shoehorn her into Harley's role?

Pretty much this. It sounds like secret poster wants a new character. Not Harley. Because everything they listed is pretty much what makes Harley Harley. The abuse metaphor was there from day one with her creators Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

I don't like her either, but your idea sounds just as boring to me. To each their own though.

Not that I'm disagreeing on the writers, but man, hearing voices isn't FUN, particularly when it comes to the types of voices most commonly heard by American schizophrenics (generally advocating violence against the self or others, statistically speaking, which is not always the case in other cultures - that's actually a fascinating topic that I'm not going to address here). The over-the-top crazy people are not functional. People who have no boundaries and no reason for what they do end up hurt or worse very quickly, and it's not entertaining.

TBH you're describing someone who isn't capable of making sound decisions and can't understand potential outcomes (which is not really a source of fun, imho) or someone who doesn't give a shit about the consequences of their actions (which, while interesting to explore in a character, does not a sympathetic protagonist make). I don't really like either of these.

This might not be the place for a conversation about How Crazy Actually Works, but honestly, this secret comes across as kind of gross.

You miiiight like her in the Telltale Batman game Batman: The Enemy Within. She's actually the one who says what goes and Joker is smitten with her and rather pathetic about it.

She's not crazy though, she's controlled chaos.

Have you read a Harley Quinn comic in the last five years or so?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-05 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh your version sounds flat and cliche as fuck. You also clearly haven't been seeing like... any Harley media outside of maybe Suicide Squad? She's been so much more than "fawning over the Joker" for a long time now.

You want a new character like that, write her and pitch her, but she ain't Harley.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-05 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
No one ever said Harley was all things to all people. No character is. Either you like them or you don't.

Your version of Harley is the Joker I got bored with as I got older. Gender-flipped BUT BETTER is also...yawn. Sure, Joker's fun as the opposite to Batman, but there's only so much depth to pure chaos. And I don't know about you, but I personally don't have a problem with love and appectance being a common theme in stories about humans. The problem is when "love" is written in a limited way ("merely a girl who wants to be loved by a man" is a trope that happens too often, yes, I'm aware of that), but I don't see that with Harley.

Doesn't Batwoman have a villain kind of like that?
