I'm a fandom old too and I really enjoy the trope. I don't think it's just a thing young people like. I'm always surprised when people are so hung-up on the wolf-thing. Most A/B/O has zero to do with wolves. Maybe the trope was inspired by wolf things in the past but it's moved on. I would bet most writers aren't even thinking of wolves at all so trying to see the trope as tied to wolves is weird now.

And it's popular because it's trope salad that you can pick the stuff you like. If you don't like mpreg, there's A/B/O that doesn't include it. If you don't like the focus on social hierarchy, there's A/B/O that's just straight porn. If you want to enjoy social explorations, there's that too. And many different takes. It's versatile and tropey, which is why it's popular. I get why it's not to everyone's taste but it doesn't seem mysterious to me why it's popular either.

Another fandom old here. I agree with you about this.

Yeah, I think most people are into it for kinky sex and aren't thinking about wolves. I have come across A/B/O fics that involve "packs," but that seems to be rare compared to fics that are just shipping and porn. A lot of the social hierarchy world-building I've come across in A/B/O is definitely not wolf-based, anyway, and more about exploring human gender roles.
