In my experience A/B/O is just an easy way to get two characters to fuck and both be really into it. "Why are they having sex?" "Uhhhhh cos this one's in heat, and they don't need to prep because he self lubricates." It can be fun if it's done well, and really ehhhhh if it's done badly, but it's good for when you just want characters to bone.

You could say that about any fanfiction trope. It's appealing because the setup is convenient. There could be other easy setups out there too but people who write it like the rest of the stuff that comes along with it too. That doesn't mean the convenient setup isn't part of the answer to why it's popular.

Most of the A/B/O I've read is actually a lot closer to the dubcon end of the scale, with the characters experiencing an overwhelming biological urge that supersedes their rational desires.
