Everything about it does sound like the most generic MCU movie that should have been part of phase one or something but just wasn't, including the generic hero, but I'm hoping it's sort of like Black Panther in the sense that the amazing cultural backdrop design is replaced by good space design (and not space-junk strangely Earth-like really limited looking GotG design, which fits those films but doesn't feel like SPACE to me) and the subtle commentary on race/culture is filled in with a very subtle commentary on gender. Key word VERY SUBTLE.

I know I've been getting spoiled on CGI because 10 years ago I would have thought it was all great but I've been thinking that the last few Marvel films have been lackluster on that front, and I'm hoping this is the film that changes that opinion, especially because I want the art to cover for plot...

a) I don't really think the race commentary in BP was very subtle
b) That didn't hurt the movie

I actually only said it was subtle for BP, and not very subtle. :p And I think it's the right amount of social commentary for that particular movie. I just think Captain Marvel needs even less of it because of different reasons.

It wasn't remotely subtle in Black Panther. Racism and the in-group schisms it can cause within affected communities was literally the driving focus of the movie.

Don't get me wrong, it was a great movie, but subtle it was not.
