The longer ago allegations are, the more difficult it is to get people to pay attention.

You could probably draw some kind of mathematical formula here - how long ago did these things happen? Is the narrative of the allegations simple, or complex? How many times did things happen, how many allegations were there? And this isn't just true for the people you cite.

In some ways, is it unjust? Probably. But I think it's largely a result of human attention spans, and not so much a double standard. Certainly, Brolin and Billy Dee are far from the only examples of people where it's true (cf. Sean Penn).

^This. It doesn't make it suck less, but I think there's more that goes into it than just a basic double standard.

In that case no one should have watched Harry Potter 3 - 5 because of Gary Oldman either.

People are hypocrites. You're gonna watch FB and I'm gonna watch Episode 9.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not necessarily hypocrisy - there's a lot of different places where a person might draw the line, and there are people who do take consistent stances

In many cases, yes, it is hypocritical, but there are places where a person can draw the line, that's all I'm saying

What other people have said. Also, not everyone has heard every allegation. I mean, I'd never heard the allegations about Josh Brolin until this secret. I knew about Johnny Depp.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen people angry about Josh Brolin being in those Marvel movies and I didn't even know about Billy Dee until this secret, which is probably the case for a lot of people. Another thing is Harry Potter was a huge part of peoples childhoods along with the upset over said kids' former hero JKR shrugging the allegations off. It's not fair that people are more focused on Depp, but let's not pretend to be surprised about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, the only reason I was pissed was because lately I can't stand Johnny Depp's face. I don't even know when it happened, because I used to be a fan of his but now I can't see him without going "Eugh!"

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
right, that's another thing - people are kind of down on JD at this point even without the abuse

(Anonymous) 2018-08-07 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? He's just so ugly. I don't know if it's because of his disgusting abusive drunk ass personality or if he just got ugly after all these years.

I can't watch PotC movies anymore. I used to love those movies so much.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Got DAMN he looks good as Grindelwald.

Are we looking at the same picture

Compared to how he usually looks? Maybe. His makeup artists and the CGI guys sure hope so. Compared to any random cute-ish dad type? Not so much.

Can I just say, I'm not sure all these situations are the same thing? Like, it is unclear to me whether there was actually domestic abuse with Brolin or not, but his whole response seems a lot healthier than Depp's? So I can see people reacting differently.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-07 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. From what I read about Brolin (after DP2) it seemed to me that he was in a bad place alcohol wise and he seems to have cleaned up and moved on, and the charges also never went anywhere?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... on top of being an awful person, Depp gave up on being a good actor years ago and he's not even physically attractive anymore. People have varying levels of what they're willing to tolerate for a good performance or spank material. Depp's got nothing to offer, so few people are willing to put up with him.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-08-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
What's interesting about this is, Brolin's domestic battery arrest (an incident where he admits he was wrong) happened about the same year Depp's life-action career started going to shit. (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on The Libertine. I'd put his last good role with Once Upon a Time in the West the year before.) That's 2004, for people who don't want to open up IMDB to sift through Tim Burton's worst and the diminishing returns of Pirates of the Caribbean. I ended up in the hospital one October and found the Antiques Roadshow marathon more interesting than Dark Shadows. Not even opiates could squeeze the fun out of that turd.

His streak in the 1990s where he had a great movie every year? That ended 20 years ago with Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas. (Ok, there was a gap where I think he was working on his music career between Dead Man and Donnie Brasco).

These are important points. I'll add that I think the character/role is a contributing factor too. JB was a giant purple thumb out to destroy the world and never actually appeared on-screen looking like himself. BDW is likely going to play a nostalgic supporting role. JD is playing a presumably major villainous role who (supposedly? implicitly?) is also a "lost love" character for Dumbledore. It might be easier to accept certain actors for the first two roles but not for the third.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I only hate his presence in the HP franchise because I think he's a shitty actor who's lost most of his talent to drug abuse and age and he's gotten ugly. He's overused, overplayed, and doesn't fit any mental vision of Grindelwald that I've ever had. I care exactly jack and shit about allegations.

I gave Fantastic Beasts a chance even though Depp is rapidly becoming a character in a Tim Burton movie. Unfortunately the first movie was derivative, uninspired, and almost completely unworthy of a cinematic release. (Similarly, I gave Orient Express a chance, and felt that Branagh gave us Branagh's fanfic of Poirot.)

My enthusiasm about the Potter universe was already starting to wain when Fantastic Beasts came out. I never saw it in the theater, but when I finally did see it, it was petty terrible.

Ugh, Orient Express. I can't. Then again, I never actually saw it. I just can't picture anyone but Suchet as Poirot.

I'm very skeptical towards any potterverse stuff but the trailer for fantastic beasts 2 looked amazing

I'm not saying I think it'll be good, just that the trailer looked amazing

Fandom is chock full of this. You better keep your eyes closed if you want to avoid double standards here.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-07 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not familiar with the other two, but I think it's noteworthy that he also seems like a really bad choice in general. Maybe there's be less backlash if he was a better fit.
