I think it’s mostly a joke, but I think it’s also a manifestation of the same kind of cultural context where Cher, Judy Garland, Madonna, etc. became gay icons despite the fact that none of them were members of the queer commmunity. A lot of these icons spoke to queer communities because they/the characters they played were aspiration and intended to be seen as successful even after experiencing hardship, were expressive and outgoing, and were seen as beautiful and people to be desired (and this especially spoke to men who were expected to be plain and were supposed to desire women and not be desired themselves and had very little femme male representation)
(I’ve done some study regarding papers that have been written on it but keep in mind I’m just a bisexual woman in her early 20’s so take this with a grain of salt).

The reason why TChalla and Thor have become “lesbian icons” is because 1. They’re aspirational characters and the fact both characters come from more “fantasy” styled settings allow for even more wish fulfillment 2. Both characters (Thor especially) are considered to be attractive in masculine ways 3. Both characters have many traditionally masculine traits, while simulaneously lacking many of the traits associated with toxic masculinity 4. Thor has a lady BFF who is bisexual and is part of a group of lady warriors 4. There isn’t a ton of butch lady representation in the media

Yeah Thor makes sense, it's just T'Challa that I don't see

Maybe because he has similar qualities, but less so, but he’s one of the few leading POC (of course there’s Rhodey and Sam and they’re cool, but they’re not as aspirational) and he’s more relatable to Black POC fans

"black poc fans"

you can say "black" dude, that's redundant and "poc" isn't an adjective
