I feel like a lot of shonen anime/manga has this problem with drawn out fights. I swear I've read at least one volume of Bleach that was just a drawn out fight scene, but it's definitely easier to skip it in the manga than the anime.

+1

It's terrible

My friend was reading (is reading?) Bleach for a community manga review group and I can remember many times where she said, "No story, lots of fighting".

Any fight that lasts longer than about a 2 minutes, screen-time, is too long.

it's the newest shonen fad and it avoids and subverts a lot of tropes, even though it's still very much S h o n e n

anyway the first time an important fight was over in a blink i had genuine whiplash i was so pleasantly surprised

Lovely!
Someone on my AO3 list of people i subscribed to writes for this fandom - a *lot* - but i'm not reading because i'm wary of stepping into a fandom where a) i might not be able to find any of the canon stuff and b) i might not be able to understand any of the canon stuff.

I might give it a go, though. :D

I get this. I mean, I like the fights so I don't care how long they are, but I get it. It does sort of depend on the arc, though, sometimes the anime does pad out the fights a bit - not so much early on but it was pretty egregious in Fishman Island and Dressrosa. And there's absolutely fight-padding in Whole Cake, it's painfully clear.

I'm just completely done with One Piece. Nothing about it interests me anymore, which is unfortunate because it was my favorite anime back in middle school. Drawn out fights are okay, but there's nothing INTERESTING about them, it's just waiting to see who the author decides has the stronger...ki? Whatever they translate that into.

its why I could never get into DBZ. I watched one episode. They spent the entire time yelling and powering up for a fight. I wandered off, came back a week later and they were still yelling and in the same fight. I couldn't even force myself to give it another shot after that.

This is pretty much why I couldn't get into One Piece, DBZ, etc. Well, One Piece just turned me off from the first episode, honestly. I managed to get through Yu Yu Hakusho somehow though, and I did watch a lot of Naruto. But yeah, when those fights get so long, it just gets annoying and boring.

I used to be super into this anime (and I keep meaning to catch up) but I don't remember being bothered by the fights.

Naruto, however....god. I remember watching the Chuunin Exam arc (or the arc right after, IDK, when Orochimaru attacks) and going WHEN DOES IT END.
