Same here, anon. I have no idea what it even is.

Consider yourself lucky. I recognise it easily and find it annoying and immersion breaking whenever I hear it.

This. It completely breaks me out of whatever I'm watching whenever I hear it.

this is exactly how I feel about those goddamn phone numbers that start with 555 or when they use a TV channel number that I know does not actually exist.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here.

Same. I've even looked it up a few times but - nah - i never really 'hear' it.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what this secret means?

The Wilhelm Scream is one single stock sound effect that's been used in hundreds of movies/TV shows. It's a man going "WAAAUGH!" and it gets snuck into a lot of battle scenes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream

Haha thank you! I listened to the clip but honestly I can't say I'd be able to pull that out of a movie or show in context.

I can recognize it in isolation, but in-context, it's just a scream.

Me too -- I just vaguely register a scream has happened.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I had noticed it getting re-used before I ever knew it had a name.

I can sometimes pick it out.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But only because I used to hear it a lot in Looney Tunes (when it played on Nickelodeon) and after I noticed it, I noticed it in other things.

lmfao

Does anyone know what the baby laughing sound is called? They user that in a lot of media too.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I just never notice it no matter how "obvious" it's supposed to be. No, sounds like regular screaming to me, oh you mean that's stock audio...? Ok...

(Anonymous) 2018-08-12 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For the longest time I thought it was the same as the Goofy holler, and since I was expecting to hear the holler in all the films listed as featuring the Wilhelm scream, I didn't understand why I never noticed it.

I can recognise the Wilhelm scream now, but I still barely notice it unless I'm really listening for it.

Ha. I only know what it is because I'd watched several movies multiple times where the scream was included. I got curious as to why that particular sound effect was in so many movies, so I had to look it up.
