Re: Is it wrong to kill off characters based on real people?

I wouldn't say we're using them like Barbie dolls, it's more that the real people were inspiration. They have similarities but are different enough that I don't think someone would immediately say "OMG John Smith is totally based on Bob Johnson!" It's just that I know the real people were the original basis, and I feel weird about it. That's probably really dumb though.

Well, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You don't feel bad about using real people as the basis for characters and doing whatever you want with them without their permission, but you feel bad about killing them? None of it is real. If you're okay with having John Smith doing things in this story that Bob Johnson wouldn't do, then what's the difference between that and character death?

I don't know, honestly. I know it makes no sense. My brain is weird.

My take on it is that you're overthinking this. But if it truly bothers you, then maybe consider working on making your characters more original and not having them be "inspired" by real life people.

I probably am. Also, it was more my friend's idea to base them on real people and I feel like in her mind they're a lot more like the real people than they are in mine so it makes me feel a little strange about it. I think I need to just either get over it or stop writing with her.
