I don't know if Anne really saw the horror in what she was writing though.

FYI, the Crystal Singer books are set in her greater scifi universe (with the Brain and Brawn Ships.) The crystals are a power and communication source and can be used in starship drives to musical instruments like organs depending on color. The only ones who can cut the crystals are those that have perfect pitch. There's a symbiotic organism on the planet that bonds with them so they live longer and heal better. The darker the crystals you cut, the more "in communion" you get with them and they block your memory. The MC finds and cuts BLACK crystal a lot, and doesn't like recording her memories down. The peril is of course, losing your memory entirely.(Which is shown in side characters.)

This was a STEP UP from the sentient PLANET that ALSO had a symbiotic organism that bonded with them and a weird fat thing. (Powers that Be, has selkies.)

"(Which is shown in side characters.) "

Not just side characters, it happened to the main character too in the third book. It was pretty interesting to see how she changed.

Right, she lost her memory and it really changed her personality. But I remember the one male from the first book specifically, where he lost his memory and they showed him basically being a vegetable who could barely keep track of light patterns on a screen. She never declined that far. (That wouldn't have made an interesting story I guess.)

I remember that scene pretty vividly because she didn't remember the medic and barely remembered the other "Singer" involved despite them coming to the planet at the same time.

For a second I skimmed and misread your comment and thought you were about to say this book was like a singing version of Step Up...but finishing my reading, I have to admit it's nothing like that.
