Favorite Romance Setups

Inspired by Secret #6 - what kind of romantic storylines do you like and what do you hate? Especially in canon - do you prefer Will They Won't They, Friends -> Lovers, lots of bickering, what works best for you?

I hate it when they're fighting and immediately fall in love, it's so fakey.

Friends to lovers is fantastic. I also love mutual pining.

I like the slow burn but not will-they-won't-they. I like it when there's attraction but for some reason they have to hold off for a while so it just simmers and gets hotter, and in the meantime, they're getting to know each other so by the time they boil over, it might've started as just physical but now it's True Feelings.

Or, I like it when there's mutual respect and it's super quiet. It's not exactly friends-to-lovers because there's a comfort to friendship that I don't want right away. I like it when there are two people who are working together forever and then it clicks one day that they're actually really great together.

Hmmm. There's a bunch of different things that I like. One common theme is that, instead of doing will-they-or-won't-they, characters just hook up right away, and then have to figure out how to make the relationship work, and what the relationship looks like, and what their feelings actually are.

Another thing that I like a ton is when two characters clearly have a thing for each other, but there's some impediment to making it work, and they're too honorable to make anything happen, so instead there's just a ton of unspoken-but-obvious feelings between them, and wordless communication, and longing, and that stuff. That's good fucking sutff right there.

Makes me barf:
The persistent nice guy/girl gets his/her love interest with... you guessed it... persistence!

From zero to fucking in 1.6 seconds (not counting FWB or one-night stands)

A romance that seems to be working too well so the writers pull something random out of their asses and break up the couple in the nastiest way ever where they hate each other's guts.

I dig:

Reincarnation love stories (but only if both parties are still in love, obviously).

The slow burn.

People who fall in love on adventures.

I'm OK with this as long as it's played for humor somewhat, not like we're seriously supposed to believe that it's True Soulmate Love just purely on that basis

Yeah, that's fine. I think Game of Thrones soured me to all the couples that jumped into bed too quickly because something horrible always ended up happening to one or the both of them.

Hahaha I almost posted this same question!

Any sort of 'guy and girl meet and either are instantly attracted to each other or hate each other at first, but you know they're eventually going to get together' kind of story I hate just because it's so damn predictable. I guess Will They/Won't They fits this too because like 99% of the time, They Will.

For shipping, best friends (or at least very close friends, even if they don't call themselves best friends) who drive each other insane but you know that deep down they care about/love each other are pretty much my favorite thing. Just about every ship I have that I can think of fits this dynamic. Unfortunately it pretty much never becomes canon because it's frequently m/m or f/f, or if it's m/f, they're almost always considered to be 'like brother and sister' by the writers and declared Never Going To Happen.

For canon ships, I prefer something that's low key/non dramatic (which is usually considered 'boring' by writers) without all the on again/off again stuff that happens so much, especially if it's non-traditional/unconventional in some way, just somehow different from most canon couples. Honestly, I hardly ever like the way canon romances are handled.

Friends to lovers. Long term relationships where they've known each other forever, have a really strong bond, just know what the other is thinking without the other even saying anything. Going through so much together. Just, long-term bonds that eventually develop into strong romantic love. My OTP has been together for millennia, so I kind of compare everything else to that.

Hate: Instant love. Bickering love or slap slap kiss kiss. Rape to love.

Yes. I love this kind of thing too.

I like friends->lovers but generally hate will they/won't they, especially in the context of American television where it gets dragged out way to long through complications that are often ridiculous.

I kind of hate will-they-won't-they mostly for the absolutely increasingly ridiculous shit writers will pull to keep a couple apart for ~Drama. Not every couple has to get together immediately and I do think slow-burns can absolutely work, but sometimes that shit is just plain annoying and I wish more writers would realise that you can have a couple be happy together without it being boring.

I actually like bickering couples but am picky with how most of them are written because they nearly always come off like they hate each other, so I mostly find them very meh.

Overall I think I'm fond of romances that are built on a foundation of mutual respect, admiration and trust. So with that I probably prefer friends-to-lovers as that's usually the best way to find that, but I can and have been taken in by relationships that don't start out as friends, but they have the aforementioned requirements I like.

I'm a big fan of friends to lovers. Especially enemies/frenemies to friends to lovers. I really like it in the latter when there's a big focus on the two realizing how much they've come to respect and like each other, and less of a focus on the 'romance' angle.

Not a fan of lots of bickering, unless the arguments are really a reflection of serious conflicts between the people (ex: Altair/Malik or Snarry are pairings I like, vs Ron/Hermione where the constant fighting is a huge turn-off).
