Many tv shows can have a rough first (or more) season because the people making it were still finding their marks at that point. Or, even if the first season isn't bad, the subsequent seasons could be on a whole other level. Fringe, Babylon 5, Next Generation, Buffy, etc. That's the reason I try to always hang on for at least the first (or the first two) season of a show before giving up on it. I've never been let down so far.

But, like it had been said here, you can simply look out for a resume of the episodes you're gonna skip then try watching the rest of the episodes from that point on. And, when you're finished watching (if it caught your interest) you could then watch the season(s) you've missed. Often, with the added benefice of perspective those episodes could look to you a lot better than they did the first time you've watched them.

I watched TNG during its initial run starting in '87. It really was the high point of 80s tv, tbh. That's how boring 80s tv was. I thought the first season of B5 was unwatchable and never went back. Never saw Buffy cuz I didn't like the movie that spawned it. But Fringe? The first two season of that show are great! It's the last two seasons that were horrible.

TNG being the trope namer for "growing a beard" is a very good example of a show that improve a lot in quality. It's one of my childhood show and I still love it, but yes, some episode could drag on.

B5 is an epic show and one with a very consistent overall story (everything was planned by the creator since the start). I kinda want to rewatch it now. The first season impact the rest of the story but is still skippable. The captain change from the first to the subsequent seasons. So, if you weren't attached to Sinclair maybe you'll like Sheridan better ?

Fringe is awesome, as are the first two seasons. But it's often agreed that the show became something even better (grew a beard) during season 3/4.

Buffy the movie is very different from Buffy the tv show because Josh Whedon didn't have much control for the Buffy The Movie. Again, if you find the first season unwatchable, you could read a resume of the episodes then start with season 2. However, one of the best thing about this show, for me, is the gradual character development. So, a resume wouldn't let you have a good feel of how the character are and of their relationships. It's a shorter season too so maybe if you watch an episode here and there it should be ok. Better, instead of watching the whole season just watch the "must see" episodes.
