You don't need to watch the first couple seasons of TNG to understand the later ones. There's not really an overarching plot like with more recent tv shows. Really you could watch any episode in any order unless it's a two parter. Even with the episodes that bring in recurring characters, they set up the episodes well enough where you can get the drift of whats going on even if you didn't see the character's introduction.

But that said, season one of TNG is pretty frickin hilarious, I appreciate the campy shittyness of it and how off the wall some of the plots are.
