I think it had a point - the point being "war is fucking awful for an individual soldier; it strips you of your individuality and it can sometimes make you into somebody you never thought yourself capable of being, and, yes, sometimes you are brave and try to do the right thing, but ther's no gurantee that you will manage or that you will maintain your ability to distinguish the good from the bad in the long run". It was extremly well-done, it just wasn't the sort-of-uplifting story of oridinary people's bravery you wanted?
