ok but let's not pretend it was *sheer coincidence* that on that became a lucky darling was the neonoir leather kung fu philosophy 101 bullet hell fuckboy fantasy, and not any of the others

I mean, The Matrix still has shitloads of weird-ass stuff in it. Loads, and loads, and loads. It's absolutely as much A Wachowski Movie as any other one. It's incredibly rich for subversive readings.

But, yes, the context around that, in this instance, was much more palatable to mainstream audiences than their other work, and that's the reason it was popular. Which IMO is a good thing on balance, since that's why they've been able to have the careers that they've had.

(and also, I mean, it's a really fucking good action movie)
