What excuse can I use to not attend the family gathering next Christmas? I don't know how to lie and I dare not be brutally honest "I love you guys but not all of you at the same time and not for too long either, you're too noisy and I hate big parties".

How far away is the gathering? Do you work? All of those can be used as an excuse.

8-to-9 hours drive, I work but my parents know that my boss usually goes easy on our vacation time and lets everyone have time off between Christmas and New Year. I don't know if pretending that "oh yes of course I'm coming then oops too bad I just got sick, I'll try to join you in a few days when I'm better" would fly?

Eight to nine hours? Holy gods.

Definitely go for 'last minute illness' - they can't come and get you, and you can ignore phone calls and then text that you were asleep/in a Nyquil coma.

You can do it, Anon.

Say that you have hurt your back and it's impossible to travel that long a distance at the moment.

the long drive can be a good excuse, either "just can't do it" or car trouble if you find yourself able to convince anyone of car trouble.

otherwise illness always works. came down with something. especially if it's like anon suggested and you cancel last-minute as if it were unplanned, that works all the time for me.

Don't make excuses at all. They lead people to think that it's a debate and they'll simply argue with you. Keep it simple and cheerful.

"I can't make it to Christmas this year, love you guys, miss you, etc."

If people ask why, just repeat that you can't make it, be sure to have some egg nog for you, etc. If they keep pushing, feel free to drop the cheer and be serious: "Hey, thanks for being so concerned about me, but like I said, I can't make it and it's not up for discussion so let's change the subject. Read any good books lately?"
