149. Wanted to add a few words on this one too. Like the OP I am a fangirl who doesn't like any kind of slash or yaoi (with the one exception being Sex Pistols) and I also am not quite sure where I fit in within fandom. I don't doubt my womanhood, but I do feel a bit left out sometimes. I am a manga fangirl primarily and a lot of my favorite series are Weekly Jump titles. For anybody who doesn't know, Jump fandoms are dominated by fujoshi. Het and gen fangirls are often the outsiders who must look to communities that specialize.

There's also the whole deal with the "slash goggles." It definitely makes it harder to relate to other fans when they are squealing over "subtext" that you just can't see.

They need to come up with a word for female otaku who are not fujoshi but not like male otaku either.

I find most "subtext" in shounen seems to be based on the idea that any strong feelings mean there has to be a sexual motivation. It's like, if there are just that many males congregating, it can't just be friendship/rivalry.

Personally, I like to imagine the characters' reactions to learning they're being slashed. It's more entertaining than trying to figure out if you're reading the same book as the rest of fandom.

I love the sheer ignorance of this statement that fujoshi can't recognize male friendships. Maybe it's one good reason they like it and the possible chemistry between two characters. PROTIP: Not all ship all friendships and/or rivalries. And it's not all about the sex or the hotness, either.

Man, why people never get this up in arms for the "endangering" of female friendships or male/female friendships. *rolls eyes*

Interesting left field absolutist interpretation.

I couldn't care less about slash in a general sense, but when I have problems on a case-by-case basis, it actually is almost exclusively from the perspective of any female character involved, and fandoms treatment and dismassal of female characters and relationships involving females is why I generally avoid fandoms.

Of course, I doubt you'll come back to see if there was a reply.
