I don't want to give away a big spoiler for the end but I thought of it because of you saying Gerry being hot made it all the more tragic.

Oh I see, you're recommending porn to a 16 year old girl. Right.

What I meant was that, the Phantom dwells so much on how his life was ruined because of how he looks, rather than the horrific crimes he committed. The fact that in the movie, the Phantom was good-looking, but scarred, may have been more tragic than having been 'ugly' from birth, as depicted in the book and the musical. As he (and the viewers) would be all the more aware of what he could have looked like, had he not been ill/in a fire/whatever the movies reason for his deformity was, and therefore, (as in the Phantoms mind, looks are related to one's quality of life) his life would have been signifigantly better.

I didn't know how old you were. As you won't be watching it I guess it's safe to tell you the Phantom turns out not to be disfigured at all.

The Phantom in the movie was disfigured from birth too (leaving aside the issue of whether a mild case of sunburn is that bad a disfigurement). It's there in the lyrics, same as in the stage show.
