It's really well suited for fandom as a movie. Really stylish, really clever and interesting worldbuilding ideas, lots of great good looking distinctive characters to write fic about, and a source material that doesn't deliver on the potential of any of it.

"source material that doesn't deliver" You said it. Demonstrated by the wealth of AUs for this fandom. Two pretty dudes in an imaginary world is basically starting with a clean canvas. One, two, three (fingers) and they're ready to be boinked together like two Ken dolls.

Yep. Sometimes the source material doesn't have to be amazing, it just needs to have interesting potential.

Interesting worldbuilding, but so so characters and only one movie. Not really much to work with I would have thought.

Yeah this one was a total let down, which makes it perfect for fanworks.

(Although personally I couldn't tell anybody apart. Really frustating. Then I realized it didn't matter much. It was all concept and precious little else.)

Ah, this was one of those things where I saw the fandom first and expected certain things from the movie and then... barely anything aka Arthur/Eames is one of those popular ships I just don't GET. I don't judge anyone for shipping it at all, cause you do you, but I really wish I could have gotten into this ship, since there was so much stuff for them. :/
