But contests aren't...why not just post the fic to an archive? Don't you get plenty of recognition for the story itself? Why do you need a contest for recognition?

I totally get why hurt feelings would kill your muse, though. In future, go to the organizers and try asking for a different recipient, explaining simply that you have a conflict of interest. It happens all the time in gift exchanges.

Archive? Like ff.net? Considering the genre, I would have gotten more recognition in the actual contest. I'll admit, I was curious to see how well it would do, but I honestly did not care about the rest.

I see I didn't make this clear. I did not have a problem with the recipient themselves. They were actually a very nice person, and I got along with them well. I was fine with the assignment until that block happened. It was only recently I wondered if it was a result of what happened back then, so there was no awareness of any conflict of interest at the time.
