(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 12:20 am (UTC)(link)Home ec and shop classes past grade 8. :( Those were my favourite classes because I'm more of a hands on gal.

Basic programming so maybe people won't be suckered into week long bootcamps.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 01:16 am (UTC)(link)Civics/government, with a requirement that everyone who’s eligible register to vote before graduating.
Basic computer programming.
A home ec type class for everyone, not just girls, covering stuff like how to sew on buttons, fix zippers, do laundry, cooking and nutrition basics, how to change the oil in a car, budgeting, how to do small home repairs, set up a bank account, check your credit score—all the disparate basic shit that most people learn from friends or parents or not at all.
Comprehensive sex ed including LGBT+ -specific issues, starting with body parts and basics in 4th/5th grade and going into more detail through high school. Maybe combine the home ec and sex ed classes into one.
This one is more of a stretch in urban and suburban areas, but how to grow food and how our food system works.
And I don’t know if a full class on the subject would fly, but a class on structural inequality in the US, or at least integrate it into civics/history/government classes. Also ffs history classes stall out before Vietnam even now, 70+ years after WWII. Make a fucking current events class if that's what it takes to cover everything between “The US defeated the Nazis and they all vanished forever and nothing bad ever happened again, yay!” and “Holy fuck, what has the orange shitgibbon done now?”
Re: What do you think should be taught in school?
god, schools STILL pretend American history stops right after JFK gets elected?!!

(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)HOW TO PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES
How to network
How to buy a house or rent a place

(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 07:34 am (UTC)(link)...okay, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the incredible irony of your story.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 07:32 am (UTC)(link)Regarding making history books recent, I was lucky in that when I was in high school back in 2002, our history books went right up to discussing the 2000 election and all the craziness surrounding it. And they were generally fairly detailed about history overall. It's horrifying to think about the fact that there's history books that don't fit that description.
Re: What do you think should be taught in school?
Also basic stovetop cooking with the only things you really need being a knife, a spatula, a spoon, a pot, and a pan.
Also also how to read a loan document.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-23 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)*FUCKING TAXES (we are known for one of the most complicated tax systems in the world)
*more real life / HANDS ON skills: basic sewing and cooking (we do get education on nutrition in biology class), small rapairs
*where to look for things
*how to network (seen above, agree totally)
*more emphasis on how to study efficiently (not everyone learns by reading / being told, some need to see, do stuff themselves etc)
(sex ed and health education is actually pretty good, since we get different classes concerning that in elementary school, 5th grade / 7th grade and in high school too)
