To me it is all in how it is written. Horrors and thrillers just have a different feel to them.

Nayrt - I'd also consider Non-paranormal scary stories to be thriller/suspense and not horror. Do you have some examples of books marketed as horror that don't contain any supernatural elements?

I don't read much horror books. A movie example would be the Orphan. Another would be the Visit. Silence of the Lambs is a cross I think. It has thriller elements and also horror elements.

Hmmm, okay. Those are usually clarified as psychological horror, which seems fair. Maybe OP should change up how they're asking for recs.

Psychological horror is realistic horror???

(Anonymous) 2018-08-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily!! But people generally understand it refers to horror without gore or strong supernatural elements, which might be closer to what OP is looking for and less confusing than "realistic horror".

The Collector. Misery. Cujo as mentioned in the secret. The Tell-Tale Heart. The Yellow Wallpaper. Intensity.

The Tell-Tale heart is a great example.

As to what I think the difference is, horror is just pure terror, sometimes with gore sometimes not. Thrillers are more psychological and require more thought to understand it.
