Leaving the American deep South (Alabama) and discovering other kinds of racism and prejudice existed besides just white people/black people. I was terribly naive and this discovery was most disheartening.

On the other hand, moving from a majority white city to a majority black city has made me a bit cynical about my north-of-the-Ohio progressive kin.
