Sure, it's totally plausible, "white" is a socially constructed category that varies over time and place anyway

In the U.S., Italians weren't considered "white" until the late 50s, or early 60s. And that's even in areas where there was a significant Italian population.

A lot of it had more to religious discrimination (Italians are primarily Catholic, most of the U.S. is...not.) rather than any perceived "POC-ness." In areas that had a significant Catholic population (Irish, Polish Puerto Ricans, French) Italians were deemed "white" much earlier (mid- to late-50s).

In parts of the country where there weren't a whole lot of Catholics, Italians were "not white" until much later (we're talking mid-60s).

Interestingly enough, quite a few white supremacist groups in the U.S. distinguish between Italian subgroups who trace their ethnicity from the northern parts of Italy vs. Italian subgroups from the southern parts of Italy. Northern Italians are considered "white" (the perception they have "European white blood") while Southern Italians are considered "mud Italians" (the perception they have a mix of ethnicities from Northern Africa which...is not entirely wrong...but in the eyes of these mooks makes them "mongrels" and therefore not European).

Source: My very Italian relatives who, thanks to the magic of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force spent time in various parts of the country due to military service. As well as me and my relatives being called "mud Italians" to our faces by skinhead assholes.

Same person as above: Which only goes to show. The designation of "white" IS pretty much a social construct in the U.S.

My sister, who was a child in the 50's was able to take advantage of a program for minority students. I, who came along a decade or so later was not. Italian living in California.
