there's a website http://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/ that has goofy looking science fiction book covers. I have read some of these books and quite a few of these book covers have absolutely nothing to do with the content of the books. Apparently a lot of sf publishers just buy up weird-looking art cheap and stick it randomly on the book covers.
I also remember a christian magazine called Guideposts (I'm an atheist but my christian parents used to send me the thing till I asked them to stop) that had a story by a young Asian woman but the illustration of her that accompanied the story was white, sharply in contrast to her photo which also accompanied the story.

I was not at all prepared for that website and the very first image made me snort my beer. What a goldmine.
