Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but in this piece he's being sulky and not a good dad, which is exactly what you're saying you think he's like?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah but he's doing it in a way that's cute and caring and likable in the image

not doing weird passive-aggressive emotional flameouts

Looks more "completely disinterested" than "cute and caring and likable" to me, but YYMV.

nayrt but I agree. Unfortunately, our culture as a whole tends to romanticize men who don't/can't behave like responsible adults. So the idea of Anakin behaving like Padme's third child instead of her partner in marriage is cute and likeable.

for the record, i don't think it's cute.

Same. My first thought was, "so this is basically in character."

Yes! The kids look bored and fed up and as if they wish their dad would pay attention to them instead of the game.

Some AUs are just more AU than others. In this case, it's not only "Imagine that Padme and Anakin averted tragedy and got to raise their kids." It's also "Imagine Padme and Anakin's relationship wasn't an emotional and psychological dumpster fire from beginning to end and that they would have both been good and stable parents."

It's not that weird of an AU. It's nice to believe that if two people just love each other hard enough they can make everything else work out no matter how fucked up they are. But everyone's got a limit on how far they're willing to suspend disbelief, even for an AU.

Yeah, it's "Imagine if Anakin wasn't miserable for most of his life and could have dealt with his emotions with some breathing room," etc. A lot of cards were stacked against them ever being a happy family, but I can see how people would like the hypothetical fluff,

(Anonymous) 2018-08-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Imagine Anakin was the kind of person who developed coping strategies that didn't involve the mass slaughter of innocent children."

(Anonymous) 2018-08-29 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's a pretty dramatic AU, especially when it's not really marked as being an AU version of the character and the whole nature of the relationship at hand. Which isn't a problem for me, but given the objections people have to trans/POC headcanons I'd have though it'd be a bigger deal.

Woobiefication is as old as fanfiction itself. You've just discovered Woobie!Anakin for people who get turned on by wholesome parenting, is all. (See also: Every "Snape adopts Harry" fic that didn't end with them fucking.)

(Anonymous) 2018-08-29 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think for me, and, apparently, in most of the fics I've read where Anakin ends up a good dad, the things he has to do to work through the suck of his life so that he comes out the other side as something that's not Darth Vader and/or a whiny manchild also involve him figuring his shit out enough to be a mostly-decent and definitely-involved-and-concerned parent. So "Anakin is a good parent" is kind of a corollary to or side effect of "Anakin works out his other shit more functionally than he does in canon." (And, man, could I overthink all of this at megafauna-cerulean-ungulate length, lol, but I'll stop here.)

I plead guilty to indulging in similar fluff myself... but would much prefer a nice juicy dark fic focusing on the dysfunctional and disturbing elements of Anakin/Padme. Not sure if any exist as I haven't been active in that fandom in ages.
