125. I know the feeling. I went to see TDK with my mom, and she got angry at me when I laughed at the Joker's "magic trick." And other "jokes." My Dad, on the other hand, laughed harder than I did. <3

168. Why, because it wasn't soul-crushingly depressing? I read the book first and liked it well enough, but the musical is one of my Favorite Things Ever. I think Elphaba deserved a semi-happy ending.

177. Um... did you not see Act III? It looked pretty cool up until the point where it, you know, tore out his heart and left him an empty shell of a human being. (But if TDK!Joker is the first time you've "enjoy[ed] bad guys," you're kind of a newb anyway, sorry to say.)

It's not about Elphaba deserving a happy ending. That's completely missing the point.

Okay, see, part of the problem is that I don't really know what the point is. Maybe I'm a bit dense, maybe McGuire doesn't do a very good job of getting it across, or maybe my reading just doesn't sinc up with his writing, for whatever reason. But I don't see why, thematically speaking, she has to fail utterly at everything she's ever wanted to do, and then die.

I mean, the musical ending isn't exactly "happily ever after." Pretty much nothing goes the way she wanted it to. Everyone in Oz hates her, and will go on hating her until they forget about her completely. But she did accomplish something, in a round-about sort of way, and she's alive and going to be more-or-less okay. And if that's more than someone like her can ever hope to get, I don't want to know it, because if I did I might just give up right now. (Yeah, okay, you caught me — I'm biased.)

But I can understand why, if you really, really loved the book, you would hate the musical. They're different stories with different messages.
